We are pretty casual when it comes to mealtime. We rarely eat at the dining room table. The exceptions are when we have company and our annual Valentine’s Day Dinner.
The menu for our special dinner isn’t always the same except for our main dish. It has been the same for as long as I can remember. It’s these cute little heart shaped Chicken Fried Steaks with Mashed Potatoes and Country Gravy. Doesn’t that just seem like “Heart Warming” food?
I will have a link to the recipe for them soon. Well, let’s say it’ll be here before Valentine’s Day 2020.
This year one of our side dishes was my kids favorite Pink Salad (also, recipe to come). We also had green beans and a roll.
Another tradition is to use the “Fancy Glasses”. I literally store these glasses all year for this one occasion. We have exactly 8. (I can’t believe we’ve never broken any.) Every time I clean out my dish cupboard I wonder if I should get rid of them, but I can’t. My kids love them!
As we eat dinner, we usually take turns saying something that we love about each person. It warms my heart every time. This year, however, we did things a little different. I found a Valentine Quiz for Kids that was shared by Brooke Romney @brookeromneywrites. It tested the kids knowledge about mine and John’s dating years. It was super fun to hear what the kids knew about how we met, our first kiss, first date etc.
As my kids have gotten older, It has gotten harder to find a night to have our dinner. I haven’t let that stop us! As I was preparing for our dinner this year, Macie reminded me that there was a boys basketball game she and Tayden were going to. Tayd was at practice so I text her and asked if she would come home for dinner and then go back to the game. She did. She drove home, ate dinner with us and then she and Macie headed back to the game. It made me realize that maybe even my teenagers enjoy this little tradition as much as I do.
I want to add a little disclaimer that the important part of this dinner is NOT the cute little heart shaped steaks or the pink and red side dishes. The important part of this dinner for me is the time together with the entire family, the making of memories and continuing on of traditions. All of these can also be accomplished by having pizza or take-out if that’s your jam. Cooking yummy food for my loved ones just happens mine. It makes me happy and so that’s what I do!
